ASUS router NAT setup
This document describes how to set up an ASUS router in NAT mode,
typically for use with a single static or dynamic IP address.
This is based on my experiences with an ASUS
AAM6000EV router, firmware revision 71146a1, connecting to
Eclipse Internet.
Solwise, the UK
importers, have produced an excellent
Quick Setup Guide that comes with the router, if you
want a more friendly description of this.
Step by step
- Make sure you have a serial cable handy - if you mess up the router
configuration you may need it.
- If you've already been fiddling with the router configuration then it
may be best to start with the factory configuration. So if you have been
fiddling, then, from the web interface, you can select Sys-Maintenance
then Factory default, then press Submit.
- Set your host(s) IP address(es) to 192.168.1.x (where
x=2-254), subnet 255.255.255.0, and both gateway and DNS to
192.168.1.1.
- From a host, point your web browser at the router on
192.168.1.1 (the router's default address). The default User Name
is adsl, Password is adsl1234.
- Select Quick Setup Wizard then Channel.
- Add Channel 1 with the details (vary as specified by
your ISP):-

... then Submit and confirm to save the
configuration.
- Select Sys-Maintenance then
User. You should change the default adsl user details to
something more secure. To do this, enter:-

... then Submit to save the new details.
- Select Reset Modem and confirm to load the new
configuration.
- When the router is ready, you should be able to access the Internet
from your hosts.
